The new Czech National Library on Letná

The new library in Prague

Bold design or arogant intrusion in traditional architecture

Jan Kaplický, one of the most renowned Czech architects, designed the project for the new library in Prague, which is as bold and unusual as the decision to build it within the boundaries of the historic center. It is designed to function as a community center, rather than a traditional library where patrons will be able to retrieve materials within five minutes. It will offer lecture rooms and wireless Internet as added amenities.

However, while no one doubts the functionality and uniqueness of the project, there are some hard opponents, even within the highest levels of government, who do not want to see a purple and gold octopus like building in the city center. On the other hand, Kaplický and his UK studio Future Systems, won the National Library’s competition March 2, beating out 354 other architects - a contest that attracted 760 registrations and boasted a jury including Zaha Hadid, Eva Jiricna, Dominique Perrault, or UNESCO representative Irene Wiese von Ofe.

Although there is no right and wrong answer to the question whether this design should be realised, it is in moments like this that yet another question is posed, how far should the city go to protect its natural heritage and spirits? Should contemporary buildings be built outside the historic center?

Nevertheless, this three billion CZK project deserves careful consideration and decision as there are many historic as well as practical factors to consider.
