A New Seed of Contemporary Architecture in Olomouc

Contemporary Czech Architecture | S&W | Real Estate News

The beautiful Moravian town of Olomouc might soon give us yet another reason to visit, as a new contemporary building that plans to house the Olomouc Museum of Art could spice up its historical center.

According to the project of the Middle European Forum in Olomouc, the institution which runs the local Museum of Art, by 2014 the original building of the museum should be meticulously restored while the so far empty building estate next to it should become home to the new building of the museum - a bold contemporary building projected by architect Jan Sepka. The whole project is hoping to gain financial support from EU funds.

The projected building should consist of five compact wholes, reminders of the fact that there once used to stand five houses on the place of the projected building. The light colored facade of the new museum building will consist of elements of concrete with added ground marble. The non-traditional exterior should be matched by the non-traditional concept of the institution located inside, since it will become home to a true new generation museum whose visitors will not be expected to tiptoe from one exhibit to another but rather activate their imagination and thus co-create the resulting experience. They will have an opportunity owing to plenty of space for drawing and animation as well as accessible artistic studios. What is more, the complex will include a library and will regularly host programs concerning music, film and literature while its main focus will be fine arts from the cultural space of Central Europe.

Given that the contemporary architectural project has already had to face problems concerning the buying out of the building estate and controversial mixed emotions and reactions from the public as well as from politicians, we can only hope that the ambitious, bold but fascinating project will be realized.
